Content:
Lesson 1: Basic Dental Anatomy (Tooth Root-Crown-Nerves-Gum-Bony Alveolus)
• Understand what is in the mouth – basic structure of teeth, jaw bone, nerves, and soft and hard tissues
• Reasons why some teeth are removed and complexity
• Furcation areas, root curvature, fusion, ankylosis, vertical fractures, and fractured tips
• Knowledge of the principles of how teeth are extracted
• Tooth numbers, surfaces, ADA item codes for oral surgery
• Dental terminology
Lesson 2: Extraction Procedure, Instruments and set up (Simple and Surgical)
• The set up for simple and surgical extractions
• Setting up for X-rays and other tests
• Instruments: Extraction Forceps, Elevators, Luxators, Root picks, surgical burs, and surgical instruments
• Healing packs, Bone grafting material, and dressings
• Flap design, Suturing material and methods
• Incisions for drainage of abscesses
• Overview of implant surgery (this is covered in detail in DA_M5)
• Complications of dental surgery
• Assisting for dry socket
• Dental terminology
Lesson 3: 4-handed Dental Assisting for Oral surgery procedures
• Morning huddles and anticipation
• 4-handed dental assisting for extractions
• Charting and ADA item numbers for extractions
• Record keeping, medical history checks, and note writing
• Consent paperwork
• How to retract tissues, how to have a clear field of vision, How to support the TMJ
• Communication and support of patient during procedures
• Post op instructions following extractions
• Time and stress management under difficult conditions

Lesson 4: Principles of Infection control, PPE, WHS, Waste management, and tracking
• Infection control and sterilisation principles around blood-soaked instruments
• Concept of Universal and Standard precautions, hand washing and minimising cross contamination
• Critical instruments and instrument tracking, Bagging and Loading instruments in autoclaves
• WHS, PPE, Sharps injury prevention and management, Inoculations
• Waste segregation and disposal
• Cleaning up surgery after a patient and setting up for new patient – turnaround time

• NOTE: Lesson 4 is an overview of general principle rather than detailed sterilising procedures as every practice needs to follow their own protocol as per recommended guidelines.
