(THER2) Management of children with tricky dental problems and behavioral issues : for Dentists and Dental Therapists
Managing children in the dental chair is often the most challenging dental encounter a practitioner can face. Many dentists and therapists shy away from treating children and prefer to refer this large section of patients to other more qualified or able practitioners causing loss of income. The families of these children are also often lost in this referral.
Having specialised as a Paediatric dentist but working in a General Practice environment allowed me to have a holistic view of the broad range of staged solutions to the various dental problems being presented in the child population and it also gave me a good overview of different behaviors exhibited by children and how best to manage them. This allowed me to develop 5 key approaches to the management of the child patient in a way that eliminated the use of even chairside nitrous oxide sedation with only a very small number of children needing referrals. The success experienced in managing these children increased referrals to the practice by satisfied parents and allowed me to further build on my patient base.
